Koodal Azhagar Temple is located about a few kilometers from Madurai
on the way to Pazhamudhircholai.
This temple is dedicated to Lord
Vishnu. Its architectural and sculptural works are magnificient.
Many beautiful sculptures and paintings are available inside the
temple.
Here
the Lord Vishnu is in the sitting or asana, standing or sthanaka and
reclining or sayana postures, all enshrined in one vertical plane.
The deity is worshipped here as Koodalazhagar. The name Koodal
emerged from the legend that all the Devas and the Munivars came
together at this place for the marriage of Meenakshi Amman to
Sundareswarar.
This temple is built in an area of 2.5 acres of land. It has five
tired Rajagopurams. Huge stone walls surround the temple. There are
also shrines to Lakshminarasimhar, Ramar, Krishnar, Andal and
Navagrahas.
Annual festival is celebrated in the month of Vaisaki. Dasavatharam
is enacted here at this time. Also celebrated are the Maasi Teppa
Utsavam, Aadi Pooram, Krishna Jayanti, Purattasi Garuda Sevai,
Navaratri, Kartikai and Vaikuntha Ekadasi.
