Krishna Giri Fort, Gingee Fort Photo Gallery. The Senji Fort is located near Thiruvannamalai in Tamilnadu.
One can visit the fort on the way to Thiruvannamalai. The Fort is in Villupuram district. The name Gingee is derived from the original name Sengiri, but some how reduced to Gingee over time.
The fort was originally built by Chola dynasty and was later taken over by the Nayaks, then by the Marathas, Bijapur sultans, the Moghuls, Carnatic Nawabs, French and the British.
The Senji Fort complex is on three hillocks - Krishnagiri to the north, Rajagiri to the west and Chandrayandurg to the south-east. The three hills are together connected by the fort walls and the complex has a seven storey Kalayana Mahal (Marriage Hall), granaries, prison cells, gymnasium and a temple dedicated to Chenjiamman.
Gingee Fort is maintained by the Archaeological Survey Of India (ASI).
