Madurai Temple Towers are the landmarks of Madurai city. The original temple was built by Kulasekara Pandya. But the glory of the temple in its present state is attributed to the Nayaks who ruled Madurai from the 16th to the 18th century. The temple complex is within a high-walled enclosure. The complex houses 12 magnificent gopurams or towers that are elaborately sculptured and painted.
