Fort St.
George is at Kamarajar Road. The British East India Company
constructed it in 1653 A.D. It is one of the finest examples in
India of British military constructions. The city of Madras was
founded after building Fort St.George. The fort marks the beginning
of the development of Madras. It was here that Robert Clive who laid
the foundation for British rule in India lived and planned his
operations.
Fort St. George now houses the Tamilnadu Legislative Assembly and
the Government Secretariat. The building is constructed in typical
English style. The St. Mary's Church and the Fort Museum are housed
inside the Fort.
The best time to visit is on a Sunday.
St.Mary's
Church
This
Church is situated within the Fort St. George. It was the first
Anglican Church built in India in 1680. It has also kept alive the
memory of Robert Clive whose wedding was solemnized here and lived
opposite the church. It is converted into the office of the
Archaeological Survey of India now. The church is popularly known as
the 'Westminster Abbey of the East'. Entry is free.
Fort Museum
The Fort
Museum exhibits Armory, coins, medals and other artifacts used by
the British. This building first housed the office of the Madras
Bank. The first floor of the building has the banquet hall. It has
the paintings of the Governor of the Fort and other high officials
of the Regime. The canons of Tipu Sultan decorate the ramparts of the
museum.
Timing : Saturday to Thursday from 1000 to1700.
