Sri Parthasarathy Temple is situated at Triplicane near the Marina
Beach in Chennai. This is a Vaishnavite temple dedicated to Lord
Krishna who was a charioteer to Arjuna during the Kurukshetra war.
The temple is a splendid creation of the Pallavas of the 8th
century.
The usual Chakra (the wheel) associated with Mahavishnu is
conspicious by its absence. Sridevi and Bhoodevi - the consorts of
Lord Vishnu are seen on either sides of the Uthsavamurthy (the
mobile deity).
The special feature of this temple is the installation of the idols
of the 5 avtars of Lord Vishnu. Vedavalli - another consort of the
Lord is also enshrined here. In front of the temple is the "Pushkarani"
tank has no fish.
The Lord Krishna is called as VenkataKrishnan. The idol of the deity
is presented to the saint Athreya by Veda Vyasa. Athreya Munivar
installed the idol at this place.
The Brahmothsavam(April-May), Vasanthothsavam (April-May),
Pavithrouthsavam in Avani, Adhyayana Utsavam in Markazhi, Floating
festival, Davanauthsavam (March-April), for Sri Gajendra
Varadharajar (May-June), for Sri Ranganathar, Sri Ramar, for Andal ,
for Vethavalli Thayar (September-October), for Ramanujar (April-May)
and Sri Manavalama Munigal (celebrated for 10 days). 'Vaikunda
Egathesi' is an unique festival, in the month of margazhi (Dec-Jan).
Sri Parthasarathy temple along with the Kapaleeswarar temple are the
two important destinations of pilgrims visiting Chennai.
