Thousand Lights Mosque is ideally located at the heart of the city
at a junction of Mount Road and Peters Road at Thousand Lights. The
mosque is situated in a very busy road. It was built in the mid-1800
in the land donated by the Nawab Wallajah and was rebuilt in 1981.
This
is a very beautifully built cream-coloured mosque with multi domes.
The walls bear recently painted verses from the Holy Koran. The
mosque has two tall minarets. There is a seperate place of worship
for women. The mosque also has a library, burial ground and a guest
house.
The legend is that over one thousands lamps were needed to light up
the Assembly Hall that was present at the same spot, hence the
mosque got its name Thousand Lights Mosque. Devotees throng the
Mosque during the annual Muharam Festival.
This is a Shia Mosque. Thousand Lights Mosque is a shrine and a
seminary is attached to it. The present Mosque can accommodate about
1000 people at a time.
